In the framework of the Erasmus+ Higher Education Reform Experts (HERE) activities, a workshop on the Development of Internal Quality Assurance was organised on 5 October 2015 at the Islamic University of Lebanon, Campus Khaldeh.
The workshop, organised in collaboration with the Directorate General of Higher Education and the UNESCO Regional Bureau, is part of a series of Erasmus+ events contributing to higher education reform at the national level.
The workshop addressed concepts, practical tools and procedures for the implementation of internal quality structures within the Lebanese universities. It also comes as a response to the requirements defined by the new law of Lebanese higher education. Experts from Europe, the region, the UNESCO and from Lebanon took part in this event and exchanged ideas and experiences with the participants.
About 100 academics nominated by their universities and representing more than 25 Lebanese higher education institutions attended the workshop and actively participated in the discussions, the debate and the practical sessions.
The workshop was opened officially with introductory speeches given by the National Erasmus+ Office in Lebanon, the EU Delegation, the Islamic University of Lebanon, The UNESCO Regional Bureau and the Directorate General of Higher Education.
Two Plenary sessions were conducted. In the first session on International Concepts and Practices, chaired by the HERE member Professor Hania Nakkash, Rafael Llavori from ANECA, Spain and an EUA board member presented the objectives and principles of IQA and Michaela Martin, a UNESCO expert presented many “Promising Practices in Internal Quality Assurance the world over”.
In the second plenary session on Lebanese experiences in IQA, chaired by the HERE member Professor Nada Moghaizel Nasr, five practices from the Lebanese American University, the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik, Beirut Arab University, the Lebanese University and the Islamic University of Lebanon were presented respectively by Professors Diane Naufal, Georges Yahchouchi, Maha Abul Ela, Mohamad Chouman and Ilham Slim. The session was followed by a discussion panel.
The afternoon session consisted of a workshop directed by the HERE member, Professor Chafic Mokbel, in which all participants were divided into working groups to follow practical exercises on 6 issues related to IQA. These issues covered the themes of University Governance, Teaching and Learning, Communication, Programmes and Recruitments, Data and Analytics, and External Evaluation. The groups were assisted by HERE members the keynote speakers.
All ideas and results raised during the workshop were discussed in a concluding session, chaired by the Director General of Higher Education Professor Ahmad Jammal, and in which Professors Chafic Mokbel, Manal Khalil, Michaela Martin and Rafael Llavori took part and exchanged with the audience.
